PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method able to sense direction of rolling (longitudinal or lateral) simply with an apparatus of a small structure. SOLUTION: A rolled plate 16 is irradiated with red light at a specified angleθof incidence by a light emitting part 10a of a sensor 10 and return light reflected from the plate is received by a photodetecting part 10b. The light is transduced into a voltage by a signal processing part 14a in proportion to the quantity of light detected and the voltage value is outputted to a voltage value display part 14b' of an output part 14b. When the voltage value is large, the lateral rolling is judged as the direction of rolling is orthogonal to the direction of incidence, and when it is small, the longitudinal rolling is judged as the direction of rolling is parallel with the direction of incidence. Such a judgment may be performed by watching a display part with naked eyes. The judgment also may be performed within the signal processing part and the results of the judgment are shown by controlling the lighting of a results of judgment display part (lamp) 14b''.
