PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing medicines and agrochemicals of the like. SOLUTION: This new compound is shown by the formula, namely, 3-(N-t- butylcarbamoyl)isoquinoline. This compound of' the formula is obtained by reaction of 3-isoquinolinecarbonitrile with t-butyl alcohol or isobutylene in the presence of an acid (pref. sulfuric acid). The amount of the acid (sulfuric acid) to be used is >=2 mol per mol of the 3-isoquinolinecarbonitrile, and the reaction is carried out at 0-50 deg.C. Hydrogenation of the compound of the formula affords 3-(N-t-butylcarbamoyl)decahydroisoquinoline, which is used as an intermediate for HIV protease inhibitors. The compound of the formula can be obtained in a high yield and purity. |
