Apparatus (10) for intercepting solid matter from a fluid flowing through a drain, pipe or the like, includes a coupling (12) adapted for being coupled to an outlet of the drain, pipe or the like. The apparatus also includes a diversion mechanism, which in one form is a netting (14) adapted for intercepting the solid matter in the fluid and attached to the coupling in a manner such that fluid leaving the outlet can pass through the netting. Further, the apparatus includes a netting release mechanism (38) adapted for interacting between the netting and the coupling so as to release the netting from the coupling when a predetermined amount of solid matter has been intercepted. The diversion mechanism can also be provided in the form of an offtake pipe (70) or as overflow vents (80, 82).
