Electric power steering for vehicle with steering variable gearbox mechanism

The steering system has a variable ratio steering drive mechanism. An electric motor (10) exerts a steering assisted torque on a steering system of the vehicle. A steering torque sensor (12) determines a torque of the steering system and produces a signal (T), corresponding to the determined steering torque. A sensor (13) determines the behavior of the vehicle and produces a signal (Y) corresponding to this behavior. A control unit (15) controls/regulates the electric motor on the basis of at least the steering torque. The control unit contains a steering torque computing part (21a) to give a steering torque component (Mt) which corresponds to the signal also a vehicle behavior part, to give a behavior component (Dy1), which corresponds to the signal. The control unit corrects the steering torque component by damping this with the behavior component. A motor control unit (16) controls the motor on the basis of the output signal (CO) from the control unit (15).
