The invention relates to a gearbox with a high step-down ratio. Said gearbox (1) comprises a drive shaft (2) and an output shaft (3) in addition to at least two interconnected gear stages (6, 6') ensuring desired step-down. Each of the gear stages (6, 6') is mounted in a respectively separate housing module (4, 5). The housing modules (4, 5) can be secured and aligned with each other. The invention provides for modular construction of said gearbox whereby the individual modules (4, 5) are pre-mounted with the individual gear stages (6, 6') and are joined in the final mounting. The invention also provides a substantial reduction in the amount of effort required to fit the gearbox elements into the tubular housings. Finally, the invention enables various gear stages (6, 6') to be combined with various kinematic functions or step-up ratios.
