Automatic gear change mechanism with hand selector

The hand selector has different positions (P, R, N, D, G) respectively for parking-brake engagement, reverse, neutral, automatic forward gear engagement and hand selection. The first two of these positions are accessible via neutral from the hand selection position, and the fourth directly from the latter. Neutral is also directly accessible from the hand selection position. The parking position can also be directly accessible from neutral, and with the vehicle stationary, movement of the selector from neutral into the hand selection position can be arranged to engage first forward gear.
