A heat exchanger provided with a plurality of tubes laminated one upon another with fins therebetween, header pipes arranged on the ends of the tubes, and side plates holding the tube layers, wherein the side plate (8) has its end (82) inserted into and joined to a side plate hole (10) provided on the header pipe (3 or 4), and the end (82) of the side plate (8) is tapered toward its tip (82a). Also, the end (82) of the side plate (8) is tapered toward the tip, and the side plate is provided with abutting portions (81a) abutting against the outer surfaces of the header pipe (3 or 4) for brazing the abutting portions with the outer surface of the header pipe. Further, the side plate is provided at its ends with means for preventing the end of the side plate from coming out of the side plate hole (10).
