Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor controllers containing as the active ingredient compounds represented by general formula (I), nontoxic salts thereof, acid addition salts thereof or hydrates of the same. In said formula, each symbol has the meaning as defined in the description. Because of the activity of controlling a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, the compounds of general formula (I) are useful as hypoglycemic agents, lipid-lowering agents, and preventives and/or remedies for diseases caused by metabolic errors, such as diabetes, obesity, syndrome X, hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipoproteinemia, hyperlipemia, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, circulatory diseases, hyperphagia, ischemic heart diseases, etc.
