A mounting mechanism (10) for mounting a disk brake mechanism (18) to a bicycle. The mounting mechanism (10) includes an elongated mounting bracket (30) that is mounted adjacent the bicycle wheel assembly. Preferably a first end of the bracket (30) is coupled to the wheel dropout (12) of the frame (16) and a second end of the bracket is coupled to a portion of the bicycle frame, such as the seat stay (14). A mounting band (52) or other similar coupling element may be used to couple the second end to the frame (16) such that the integrity of the frame (16) is not compromised. The disk brake component (18) to be mounted adjacent the wheel is coupled to the mounting bracket preferably between the ends of the bracket (30).
