Continuous, filament reinforced, wound poles (10), and the method of making, where the poles (10) are formed by winding a base mandrel (20) with continuous, resin-impregnated filament reinforcement (30), coaxially abutting an incremental mandrel (40) and winding both the incremental mandrel (40) and the wound first mandrel (20) with a second layer of continuous, resin-impregnated filament reinforcement (50). The base mandrel (20) is thus wound with two layers of reinforcement (30, 50). Additional incremental mandrels (40) and additional layers of continuous, resin-impregnated filament reinforcement (50) are successively wound as desired. Preferably all windings occur prior to the curing of any previous winding. The ends (22, 42) of the mandrels (20, 40) and any cross winding across these ends (22, 42) form stabilizing members within the poles (10) to counteract against compressive forces. The pole (10) has a smooth outer surface when the additional mandrels (40) are properly sized to mate with the wound ends of the previous adjacent mandrel (20).
|
