A waste water sediment treatment measuring process and assembly determine the horizontal phase boundary between a clear liquid phase (1) holding a relatively low level of sedimentary solids, and a lower liquid phase (2) having a relatively high sedimentary content. The novelty is that: (a) a high-frequency ultrasonic transmitter/receiver (9) is located under the surface and emits a measuring signal from an impulse generator (5-8); (b) the receiver (9) detects the reflected or back-scattered signals from the transmitter within the same phase, and passes the signals received to a signal processing unit (10- 23); (c) a timing device (15, 20) measures the time between the transmitter signal emission and the receipt of the reflected or back-scattered emissions at the receiver.
