FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: present invention describes process for preparing 2-alkyl-6-methyl-N-(1 -methoxy-2 -propyl) aniline by catalytic reducing alkylation wherein at least one more equivalent of methoxyacetone is reacted with mole equivalent of 2-alkyl-6-methylaniline in liquid medium without addition of solvent, in the presence of platinum containing carbon catalyst and hydrogen and in the presence of platinum containing carbon catalyst and hydrogen and in the presence of acid cocatalyst at hydrogen pressures from <EMI ID=0.524 HE=6 WI=9 TI=CHI> to <EMI ID=0.525 HE=6 WI=9 TI=CHI> Pa at temperatures from 20 to 80 C. Reaction mixture contains water from beginning of reaction and after hydrogenation. Base is added, reaction mixture is filtered to separate catalyst, and title compound is recovered from filtrate. The claimed process is especially useful for preparation of N-substituted chloroacetanilide herbicides, improves separation of hydrogenation catalyst, acid cocatalyst and desired compound, with yield and purity of the desired product maintained.
