A breathing filter for use in medical procedures includes a fluid treatment element (18) for treating a fluid inspired or expired by a subject and a housing (10) surrounding the fluid treatment element. The housing is partitioned by the fluid treatment element into first and second regions. The housing includes a first port (16) communicating between the first region and the exterior of the housing, a second port (17) communicating between the second region and the exterior of the housing, and an access port (20) communicating between the first region and the exterior of the housing. A valve (30) associated with the access port (20) includes a sealing portion movable between an open position permitting fluid flow through the access port and a closed position preventing fluid flow through the access port, and a biasing portion (33) biasing the sealing portion towards its closed position. |
