PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly use facsimile communication or usual telephone communication by discriminating a pattern of a call signal sent from an external line and automatically selecting the external line to a facsimile transmission reception section when a prescribed call signal is received so as to effectively utilize a ring service depending on the type of communication. SOLUTION: In the case of a call signal with different ringing tones depending on a communication type, facsimile equipment A discriminates a call signal pattern as to whether it is facsimile communication or usual telephone communication. As a result, a CPU 1 selects the facsimile communication mode in the case that the discrimination indicates a facsimile pattern, that is, the CPU 1 turns a CML relay RY to contacts a, b, and a signal from an external line reaches a MODEM 2. When the discrimination does not indicate the facsimile pattern, the CPU 1 turns the CML relay RY to the contacts c, d, and a signal from the external line reaches an ancillary telephone set, and a bell of the ancillary telephone set rings. And when the handset of the telephone set is hooked off, the signal reaches the ancillary telephone set. The different ringing tones depending on a communication type are utilized, so that the pattern is discriminated before charge imposition and the signal is reached after changeover.
