PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically and quickly check a telephone number by accessing a PHS network by using a PHS data terminal corresponding to a prescribed protocol, requesting digital data communication with an opposite data terminal and analyzing the response. SOLUTION: A software program for checking the validity/invalidity of a telephone number is stored in an appropriate storage medium drivable by an external storage device 14. At the time of receiving the activation command of the program from the operation panel 15 of a keyboard or the like, a CPU 11 reads program data, stores them in a RAM 12 and executes a prescribed processing. The telephone number to be checked is inputted by operating the operation panel 15, the CPU 11 originates a call by controlling a PHS communication part 21, transmission to the PHS network 100 is performed through a PHS radio channel 50 and data are transmitted and received. In the case that the communication is impossible, a reason number attached to a returned disconnection message is analyzed and the validity/invalidity are judged.
