PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately detect a straight line by defining a specified sampling space as a Hough betting space concerning a method with which an edge image is found by differentiation processing to a gradation image and the straight line is detected from Hough transformation. SOLUTION: The image of an object is picked up by a television camera 11 and digitized by using an A/D converter 12 so that the gradation image is provided. An edge detecting part 13 performs differentiation processing to this gradation image and the place of a remarkable density change is detected as an edge point. At an aquisition part 14 for the length of each straight line, a length L of each straight line is found by any means. By a design part 15 for the optimum Hough betting space, based on that length L of the straight line, the optimum Hough space is designed. In this case, the sampling space satisfying a prescribed relational formulaΔρ=F(L;Δθ) with an intervalΔθof a parameterθin the Hough space and an intervalΔρof a parameterρbased on the length L of the straight line is defined as the optimum Hough betting space. At a straight line detecting part 15, the straight line is detected from the designed optimum Hough space.
