PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bar code reader which can reproduce demodulated data corresponding to the entire two-stage bar code in a short time. SOLUTION: A CPU 1 handles as effective data the composite demodulated data of demodulated data, obtained by reading the left data block of the upper stage of the two-stage code 21 having WPC codes stacked one over the other in two stages and demodulated data obtained by reading the right data block of the upper stage and the composite demodulated data of demodulated data obtained by reading the left data block of the lower stage and the demodulated data, obtained by reading the right data block of the lower stage, only on the condition that the demodulated data obtained by reading the left data block of the upper stage of the two-stage code 21 and demodulated data obtained by reading the left data block of the lower stage both include the data corresponding to the data character of the right data blocks and that they are different from each other.
