PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium in which a surface electric resistance is lowered and in which dust articles are hard to stick by a method wherein a granular and nonmagnetic Mn-containing iron oxide particle is contained in at least one out of a magnetic layer, an intermediate layer and a back layer. SOLUTION: A granular and nonmagnetic Mn-containing iron oxide particle is set preferably in such a way that its mean particle size is 0.05 to 0.5μm, that its specific surface area is 2 to 15 m<2> /g and that its moisture content is 5% or lower. Thereby, a surface electric resistance is lowered, and dust particles are hard to stick. As result, the durability and the running property of a magnetic recording medium are enhanced. Then, the dropout of the magnetic recording medium is reduced, and its recording and reproducing characteristics is excellent. In addition, when the granular and nonmagnetic Mn-containing iron oxide particle is contained in a magnetic layer, especially a magnetic head is hard to clog, its dropout is hard to generate, and its running durability is made good. In addition, when the particle is contained in a back layer, especially the running durability of the magnetic recording medium is made good. When the particle is contained in an intermediate layer, the dropout of the magnetic recording medium is hard to generate, and its running durability is made good.
