POLYESTER AMIDE TYPE LIQUID CRYSTAL ORIENTING AGENT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable firing at a lower temp. and to uniformly orient a ferroelectric liq. crystal and an antiferroelectric liq. crystal without defects by using a polyester amide obtd. by mixing equimolar amts. of a specified amiophenol compd. and a dicarboxylic acid halide and bringing the mixture into reaction in the presence of a base. SOLUTION: The liq. crystal orienting agent is a polyester amide having a wt. average mol.wt. of >=1,000 obtd. by mixing equimolar amts. of an amiophenol compd. represented by formula I and a dicarboxylic acid halide represented by formula II and bringing the mixture into reaction in the presence of a base. In the formula I, R is halogen or 1-6C linear or branched lower alkyl or alkoxy and (n) is an integer of 0-2. In the formula II, A is 2-12C linear alkylene and X is halogen. The upper limit of the wt. average mol. wt. of the polyester amide is not particularly limited but it is preferably <=200,000 from the viewpoint of production.
