PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type liquid crystal display device which is constituted so that the utilizing efficiency of light is enhanced and which can be made compact and inexpensive. SOLUTION: A first separation element 2 is constituted so that a blue S polarized light beam is reflected and the other light beam is transmitted. A second separation element 3 is constituted so that green and red P polarized light beams are transmitted and green and red S polarized light beams are reflected. The S polarized blue light beam from a light source is reflected on the element 2 and made into the P polarized light beam by a picture display element 6a. Besides, it is transmitted through the element 2, a wavelength plate 4 and the element 3 and projected on a screen 8 by a projection lens 7. On the other hand, the red and the blue light beams are transmitted through the element 2 and the plate 4, made into the P polarized light beam and transmitted through the element 3. Then, they are separated by a third separation element 5 and respectively converted to the S polarized light beam by picture display elements 6b and 6c. Besides, they are synthesized by the element 5, reflected on the element 3 and projected on the screen 8 by the lens 7. |
