PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain carbon black and a rubber composition compounded therewith suitable for use as tire treads simultaneously satisfying the improvement of abrasion resistance and gripping force and fuel economy characteristics. SOLUTION: This carbon black, which belongs to such a hard-based region as to be >=80 m<2> /g in CTAB(cetyl tetrammonium bromide) and >=80 mL/100 g in compression DBP, satisfies the following selective characteristics requirements: (1) nitrogen absorption specific surface area (N2 SA) satisfies the relationship: N2 SA-CTAB<=50, (2) nitrogen content (N, wt.%) satisfies the relationship: 3.0*10<-3> <=N/CTAB<=1.2*10<-2> , (3) oxygen content (O, wt.%) satisfies the relationship: O/CTAB<=1.3×10<-2> , (4) weight ratio of the nitrogen content to the oxygen content O/N<=3.0 (5) basic functional group concentration (B, meq/g) satisfies the relationship: 2.0×10<-4> <=B/CTAB<=1.0×10<-2> , and (6) shell rubber quantity (S) satisfies the relationship: 5.0×10<-6> <=S<=5.0×10<-5> . The other objective rubber composition is obtained by compounding 100 pts.wt. of a rubber with 20-100 pts.wt. of the above carbon black.
