PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain carbon black simultaneously satisfying the improvement of abrasion resistance and fuel economy each suitable for tire treads, to provide a method for producing the carbon black, and to obtain a rubber composition compounded with the above carbon black. SOLUTION: This carbon black, which belongs to such a hard-based region as to be >=80 m<2> /g in CTAB(cetyl tetrammonium bromide) and >=80 mL/100 g in compression DBP, has the following selective characteristics: (1) oxygen content (O, wt.%) satisfies the relationship: 0.5×10<-3> <=O/CTAB<=1.0×10<-2> , (2) strongly acidic group concentration determined using Na2 CO3 (SA, meq/g) satisfies the relationship: SA/CTAB<=1.0×10<-4> , (3) basic functional group concentration (B, meq/g) satisfies the relationship: 2.5×10<-4> <=B/CTAB<=1.5×10<-3> , and (4) physical adsorption rubber quantity (A) satisfies the relationship: 1.6×10<-4> <=A<=1.0×10<-3> . The second objective method for producing the carbon black comprises the oxidative treatment of carbon black followed by heat treatment of the resulting carbon black at >=600 deg.C in a non-oxidative atmosphere. The third objective rubber composition is obtained by compounding 100 pts.wt. of a rubber with 20-100 pts.wt. of the above carbon black.
