The anti-theft ignition control has a central processor (12) performing verification of an access code provided by the ignition key (1) over an optical link. The central processor activates the ignition controller (14) when the access code has been verified. The central processor is monitored by a timer (17), and is returned to its initial state when an abnormal state of the central processor is detected. The central processor, in addition, permits the ignition controller to continue operation when the processor is reset by the timer circuit, so that the engine continues to operate. This avoids unnecessary repetition of the verification procedures when external noise gives rise to a transient inoperative state of the processor. |
