PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a partly silver-coated foam metal porous body having low electric resistance, at a low production cost by reducing the amount of silver used and also to provide a gas diffusion electrode having very small current feed resistance, excellent strength and a good current collection efficiency by using this foam metal porous body as a substrate. SOLUTION: Formation of this partly silver-coated foam metal porous body comprises: depositing a liquid dispersion of fine silver particles on a foam metal porous body 2; drying the resulting porous body; and sintering the porous body to coat each of the obverse and reverse surfaces of the foam metal porous body 2 with a silver layer in a part extending to a <=500μm depth from the obverse or reverse surface of the resulting partly silver-coated foam metal porous body. Also, the gas diffusion electrode has a structure which comprises: such a partly silver-coated foam metal porous body; a gas supply layer 5 that is formed within the partly silver-coated foam metal porous body and consists of a water-repellent porous body; and a reaction layer 4 formed on one of silver coating layers 3 of this silver-coated foam metal porous body so as to be in contact with the sliver coating layer 3.
