The method involves deriving an access key (18) from a predetermined part of the computer data (13) which is to be preserved. The operating program is then encoded (20,19) using the access key. The access key may be derived from a condensed section (16) of the computer data which has been derived from the full computer data by means of an irreversible cryptographic function (14). The access key may be derived from the computer data by means of a reading key (5).
