The aircraft has a jet engine providing forward thrust, and also three helicopter rotors providing lift for takeoff. The vertical takeoff and landing aircraft includes a fuselage (A) and at least three helical rotating blades (H1, H2, H3) arranged in a triangle. The rotating blades are mounted to turn about axes which are basically vertical, but which may be adjusted in their orientation. Two of the blades (H2, H3) are mounted on a spar (C) which lies perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the fuselage, such that their axes may be orientated as required. A third blade (H1) is mounted at the rear of the fuselage. Each rotating blade is driven by a geared hydraulic motor driven by a central hydraulic power supply, which is itself driven by a turbojet engine which also serves to propel the aircraft forwards.
