<p>A method of and apparatus for centrally monitoring the capacity of batteries (B1-B12) in a battery string (4) includes electrical leads (6) connected to each battery terminal (1A, 1B, 2A, 2B ...) of the battery string (4). A capacity testing system (8) a) switches (10, 20, 22, 24) between the electrical leads (6) for sequentially selecting the leads associated with the terminals of each battery, b) measures (12, 14, 16) the internal resistance of the battery associated with each selected pair of electrical leads (6), c) compares (44) the internal resistance of each battery cell to an internal resistance threshold (42), and d) triggers an alarm when the internal resistance of a battery exceeds the internal resistance threshold. A central monitoring station (28) monitors battery capacity data and alarm signals (30) from various battery strings, schedules battery capacity testing, transmits control commands to each capacity testing system (8) for i) scheduling testing, ii) initializing upload of capacity data, and iii) requesting status information, provides battery capacity data analysis, and uploads information to a network management computer.</p> |
