Variable valve actuator for internal combustion engine

A variable valve actuator (VVA) for an internal combustion engine has a hollow camshaft with an inner drive shaft (1). The cam followers are on sleeves which rotate on the drive shaft. The sleeves are coupled to control discs with eccentric grooves by pins. The other side of each control disc is coupled to a drive sleeve which rotates with the drive shaft using a pin and similar groove coupling. The outer rim of each disc is held in an eccentric housing whose setting is adjusted by a control rod, to change the timing of the cams. The control rod is supported by bearings spaced along the cylinder block to prevent bending.
