For setting the sails an overall sail surface consisting of two sail cloths (1') is drawn out to the right and left from a center boom (2') located between them, and for reefing and stowing drawn back into it and stored there in a suitable manner which may entail rolling it up on a spindle, for example. The drawing in and extending of the two sail halves is carried out synchronously by a mechanical coupling, or may be carried out independently of each other by disengaging the coupling.
