A waste water purification process has a reactor settlement tank (10) in which particles descend and collect to form sludge. The tank (10) has a raw water inlet (11), at its base, and an outlet (14) at the top for clear water. Sludge is removed from the tank through a suction outlet (17) positioned just above the layer of sludge collecting above the base. Waste water just above the sludge line and containing particulate matter is drawn off through outlets (15) and returned to the raw water inlet (11).
