A methanol reforming catalyst is pre-aged before use by heating for several hours in a dry oxidising or inert atmosphere at a temperature of at least 300 degrees C until its volume shrinkage comes to a standstill. Preferably the atmosphere during pre-ageing contains < 1 vol.%, the balance being either air or argon.
