The fragmentation reduction method has the data partial sets removed from the memory (40) and returned to the memory so that small holes in the memory are filled before large holes are filled. The removed data partial sets can be mixed in a second memory, e.g. at least one video buffer (42, 44, 46), before being returned to the first memory.
