The construction of the vertical section (1) of the case has indentations (8) giving flexibility along an axis at right angles to the end faces (4). The cells (6) partitioned by the separators (5) can thereby be stretched along the above axis to assist the insertion of electrode plates and absorbent fiberglass electrolyte pads. Elastic recovery of the section (1) on release ensures uniform electrode/pad contact pressure.
