The cams are formed from a hollow blank tube (2) by deformation caused by internal pressure. At least one section of each cam is formed from a metal plate with one or more thickening (10) to form sections of the shaft with different wall thicknesses. Single hollow shaft sections (5) can have different wall thicknesses. The cams (3) are formed by outward deformation of the tube at each thickened area.
