<p>To overcome the problem associated with surge arresters that failure of the arrester can be a fire hazard if sparks and/or incandescent particles are emitted by the failed arrester, the invention proposes to provide an arc gap in parallel with the arrester, provide an explosive type disconnect device in series with the arrester and arrange the arc gap so that it is effective to shunt the surge arrester only when the disconnect device operates. In normal operation of the arrester, arrester duty current flows through the disconnect device and the arc gap does not spark over, but in arrester failure mode the disconnect device operates and releases ionised gas into the arc gap which causes it to spark over and take the failed surge arrester out of circuit.</p> |
