Water de-nitrification process has two single batch reactors

An intermittently-operated water treatment process also incorporates an activated sludge treatment process. Two input flows of water are introduced separately into separated buffer tanks within the treatment plant at rates and times which are dependent upon their C/N characteristics. The single batch reactor (SBR) reactors are operated according to two internally separate cycles. The first charge of water (8a) to be processed is taken from the buffer tank with the lesser C/N ratio, while the second charge (8b) is drawn from the buffer tank with the higher C/N ratio. The quantity of the nitrate which is to be de-nitrified following the first or penultimate cycle is determined either directly or indirectly based on the quantity and/or type of the second batch (8b) of water for the last internal cycle. Before the reactor is charged with the first batch (8a) the water in the buffer tank (3a) is circulated (4a) for a brief period, washing out those components which have an easily broken-down COD5.
