The navigation device (1) uses map data received via a communication link from an external information center (100) and entered in a map data memory (7), the amount of use of each stored map data evaluated, for automatic selection of the least used data for erasure and replacement by new map data. Alternatively the selected map data may be compressed to release memory storage space for the new map data.
