A centering rod (11) is provided in the pile head (10) for assisting the positioning of the pile head on top of the pile (5). A wooden pile is driven into the ground until the top of it is level with the ground surface, then a connector piece (9) is used to join the bottom end of a concrete pile head to the top of the pile, and then the pile is driven in until the top of it lies below the water table (14), at which point the pile head lies beneath the ground surface. A cap at the top end of the pile head is removed once the pile has been sunk to the required depth, the gap left behind being filled in to form a concrete plug around the top of the pile head, which is then used to form further foundations. Independent claims are also included for (a) the pile and pile head arrangement, and (b) the concrete pile head.
