PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a brain-derived neurotrophy factor, manifested in a host cell by recombination, as protein by treating a water- insoluble brain-derived neurotrophy factor with a modifier and reducing agent to make it soluble and reduced and also to form free SH group, and by adding a specific compound to the above system. SOLUTION: This method treats a brain-derived neurotrophy factor (modifiedγBDNF), manifested in a host cell by recombination, with a modifier and reducing agent to make it soluble and reduced and also to form free SH group. A trimethyl ammonium alkylalkanethiosulfonate shown by the formula (R1 is a lower alkyl or phenyl; and (n) is 1 to 6) to the above system to obtain an intermediate with the free SH group modified (trimethyl ammonium alkyl BDNF). It is regenerated into an active type in the presence of an redox reagent, to produce a biologically active BDNF.
