PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as a modifier, etc., of a polyester resin, an alkyd resin or the like in high selectivity and high yield by reacting an alicyclic hydrocarbon with a polyhydric alcohol in the presence of a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: This compound is obtained by reacting an alicyclic hydrocarbon having at least one double bond (preferably dicyclopentadiene) with a polyhydric alcohol (e.g. ethylene glycol) in the presence of a catalyst containing crystalline metallosilicate, and using a solvent (e.g. nitromethane), as necessary, preferably under normal pressure -20 kg/cm<2> at 80-160 deg.C for 1-8 hrs. A compound suitable as the crystalline metallosilicate, a compound in which whole or a part of cation is substituted with a hydrogen ion, a BEA-type compound or a pentasil- type compound. preferably, a using amount of the catalyst is 0.5-50 wt.% and a mol ratio of the polyhydric alcohol is 1-10, respectively to the alicyclic hydrocarbon. |
