PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a diol useful as a raw material for various polyesters and polyurethanes in an industrially advantageous way by adding a specific sulfur atom-contg. compound to a crude reaction liquor produced by reduction from the corresponding dialdehyde as starting material, followed by conducting a distillation and purification. SOLUTION: This diol is obtained by adding a compound containing sulfur atoms each bearing an unshared electron pair (e.g. di-n-butyl sulfide, carbon disulfide) to a crude reaction liquor produced by reduction of the corresponding dialdehyde as starting material (e.g. butanedial) in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst (e.g. Raney nickel) and hydrogen followed by conducting a distillation and purification; wherein the amount of the sulfur-contg. compound to be used is pref. 10-1,000 ppm based on the weight of the objective compound present in the crude reaction liquor. Addition of the sulfur-contg. compound at a stage before the crude reaction liquor is heated to a temperature higher than the temperature at which the objective compound is decomposed enables the decomposition of the objective compound to be suppressed more effectively. |
