PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly selectively produce the subject compound useful as an auxiliary-developer in the photographic industry in high yield by reacting a specific unsaturated ester compound with a hydrazine compound in the presence of a specified amine compound. SOLUTION: (A) An α,β-unsaturated ester compound represented by formula I (R<1> to R<3> are each H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like; R<4> is a 1-5C alkyl or a 6-15C aryl) (e.g. ethyl cinnamate) is reacted with (B) a hydrazine compound represented by the formula R<7> NHNH2 (R<7> is a 1-20C alkyl or a 6-20C aryl) (e.g. phenylhydrazine) in the presence of (D) an amine compound represented by formula II (R<5> and R<6> are each H, a 1-5C alkyl or the like) (e.g. ethanolamie) and (E) a base such as sodium methylate in (C) a solvent such as 1-butanol for 1-12 hr to afford the objective compound represented by formula III. The component B is preferably used in an amount of 1-3 equiv. based on the component A and the component D is preferably used in an amount of 1-2 equiv. based on the component A. |
