PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a new compound useful as an intermediate for producing agrochemicals or medicines. SOLUTION: This 2,4-diaza-6-ethyl-2,4-dimethylbicyclo[3.3.0]octan-3-one is represented by the formula. The compound represented by the formula is produced by reacting (A) 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone with (B) ethylene and (C) carbon monooxide in the presence of (D) a catalyst composed of a compound containing a platinum group metal and platinum element [e.g. benzeneruthenium(II) dichloride dimer]. The components B and C are used in respective amounts of preferably 2-60 mol component B and 2-60 mol component C based on 1 mol component A. The component D is used in an amount of preferably 0.1-80 g atom, based on 1,000 mol component A and expressed in terms of the metal. |
