PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain a whisker without fracture loss to be used for a fiber-reinforced metal and the like by mixing an aluminum oxide powder or a powder which changes into aluminum oxide by heating and a boron oxide powder or a powder which changes into boron oxide by heating, compacting the mixture, and heating the compact in a gas containing nitrogen. SOLUTION: Aluminum oxide or aluminum hydroxide is used as an aluminum source. Boron oxide or H3 BO3 , H2 B4 O7 or HBO2 is used as a boron source. The sources are preferably compounded in 9:2 to 1:1 molar ratio of aluminum to boron. After the source powders are uniformly mixed, the mixture is compacted to form a compacted body and heated at >=1000 deg.C in an ammonia gas atmosphere. In the reaction, first the whisker of aluminum borate is formed, and then AlN is produced with the ammonia gas. Since no binder is used in this method, the whisker compacted body having high thermal conductivity is obtd. This formed body has the max. tensile strength and high volume rate of the whisker and is suitable for a composite material. |
