PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively remove an harmful component in a cigarette smoke with a filter composed of a cellulose ester fiber. SOLUTION: This filter material suitable for the filter for cigarette smoke is obtained by using the cellulose ester fine fiber having 20-250μm average diameter, <=30% of total number of the fibers in the ratio of the number of the fibers having <=10μm diameter and >=5 m<2> /g BET specific surface area. The filter material can be composed of the cellulose ester fine fiber and other cellulose ester. As the cellulose ester, a cellulose acetate is utilized. The cellulose ester fine fiber is relatively large in fiber diameter and small in the number of fibers having small diameter in spite of large specific surface area and then to be excellent in workability and yield.
