An alerting device, preferably on the screen of a user's computer provided with a video and sound card which incorporates a personal access code, the telephone number of another user wishing to communicate being shown on the screen and possibly being enhanced with luminous and/or acoustic alerting signals, use being made of an alerting switchboard capable of detecting this connection to the Internet so that the person for whom the call is intended can choose either to suspend surfing and to answer this call in the conventional manner or, alternatively, to delay establishing communication until surfing is concluded, or even to simulate simultaneous telephone and Internet connection. <IMAGE>
