FIELD: bridge-building industry. SUBSTANCE: abutment of bridge may be used in construction of bridge abutments erected at high embankments in approaches to bridge. Abutment has support body installed on foundation. Support body is provided with head-piece and sheet-piling wall. Also included are two plates located one above other and seated in ground of approach embankment and not protruding beyond caving prism. Applied to surfaces of plates facing each other are antifriction interlayers. Upper edge of overlying plate is attached to upper part of sheet-piling wall of abutment at angle which prevents sliding of ground along overlying plate, but same angle allows for relative sliding of antifriction interlayers. At aforesaid embodiment of abutment, force occurs in link which connects upper plate with sheet-piling wall due to ground pressure and sliding of upper plate together with ground. This force makes easier operation of abutment. Tipping moment in abutment caused by side pressure of ground becomes much less because plates interrupt caving of ground over curvature of slope of repose. In this case, upper plate which is displaced over lower plate generally changes direction of caving of certain part of ground and pulls abutment backwards which allows for less materials to be used in erection of abutment.
