PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for controlling a trunk line band width for controlling the band width of a trunk line according to the traffic amounts of a protocol corresponding to the communication classification of an application or a communication terminal requiring increase in band width of a trunk line. SOLUTION: Only the traffic amounts for each unit time and each communication classification of a specific communication terminal or an application requiring a certain ensured the band width are measured by a probe 18 connected with an LANa, thus the band width is determined by a managing part 19 based on this information, and also the band width of an ATM line 17 (trunk line) connecting the LANa with the LANb is changed by a band width controlling part 20. Thus, the availability ratio of the whole communication line can be improved.
