PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizer which has a high extinction ratio, eliminates the worry about peeling from a substrate, is low in insertion loss and has extremely outstanding reliability and characteristics and a process for producing the same. SOLUTION: The polarizer 1 is constituted by laminating >=1 layer of dielectric layers 5 dispersed with many metallic particles 4a having shape anisotropy in dielectric substances on at least one main surface of the substrate 2 having translucency. In such a case, the variations of the intervals between the adjacent metallic particles existing in the same dielectric layers are <=200 nm and the number density of the metallic particles existing in the same dielectric layers is 3 to 37 pieces/μm<2> .
