PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide optical constitution for preventing the lowering of a contrast ratio which occurs because polarized light becomes projected liquid even in a non-modulation state when the pre-tilt angle of liquid crystal is made large in order to prevent disclination which is easily caused by the influence of electric field in a lateral direction in a reflection type or transmission type liquid crystal picture display device using the liquid crystal in a vertical orientation mode. SOLUTION: In the reflection type display device, the elliptically polarized light obtd. by synthesizing a polarized light component Pa in the non-modulation state with a polarized light component Sa' by the incomplete diffraction characteristic of a color filter 33 is emitted from the color filter 33, but it is changed to the polarized light nearest to the linearly polarized light by a 1/4 wavelength plate 51 where the optical axis of crystal is set in a direction corresponding to the elliptically polarized light, and then which is intercepted by a polarizing plate 52 where a transmission axis is set to be vertical to the vibration direction of the polarized light. In the transmission type display device, the emission of the polarized light is prevented in the same principle. |
